Dealing with grays can be tricky task. The choices are countless. You have numerous options from natural hair color like henna to permanent hair dyes. And somewhere in between is Vasmol Kesh Kala, a hair oil that helps temporary darken the gray hair.

Often promoted as a safe option to color your hair black, is this old-school dye a timeless beauty hack or a toxic time bomb?

I tried it (so you maybe don’t have to) and here’s the full detailed review.

What Is Vasmol Kesh Kala?

If you might be wondering what exactly is Vasmol? Is it hair dye, hair oil or hair darkening shampoo? Then let me clarify it for you. It’s oil-based, developer-free hair color and comes with a vibe that screams, “I was popular in the ‘90s, okay?”

It’s often marketed as a safer alternative to harsh chemical-based hair dyes, especially for people with sensitive scalps.

How To Use Vasmol Kesh Kala?

  • Wear gloves and old clothes.
  • Start by detangling your hair and apply Vasmol directly onto your dry hair using your fingers or a brush.
  • Leave it on for 2-3 hours (Ideal time to scroll Insta or question life decisions!)
  • Rinse it off with plain water (no shampoo) the first time.
  • Shampoo your hair the next day for best results.

Is Vasmol Safe To Use?

But the question arises, is Vasmol really as safe and natural as it claims? Let’s take a close look at its ingredients list:

  • Paraphenylenediamine (PPD): The main dyeing agent, helps in darkening the hair but is toxic when accidentally ingested which is why it is banned in certain countries.
  • Liquid Paraffin and Coconut Oil: Act as conditioning agents.
  • Herbal Extracts: Claims to have amla and almond extracts, though in smaller concentrations.

While Vasmol is fine if used externally and occasionally, it contains PPD, which can cause serious allergies or worse. There’s even a medical study that shows how ingesting Vasmol is super dangerous (like, face-swelling, kidney-failing levels of dangerous). So never leave it around kids or anyone going through tough times emotionally.

It also has a very bad and too strong fragrance to it. If you have sensitive nose you will have a hard time using it. It gave me headache! Plus, it does lead to product buildup on your hair which made me reach for my clarifying shampoo that led to the hair color fading.

Despite being ammonia-free and containing hydrating ingredients, it did dry my hair out that took a lot of time and deep conditioning to get it back to nourished state.

Pros

  • Ammonia-Free: Gentler on the scalp than most conventional dyes
  • Oil-Based Formula: Helps condition the hair while coloring
  • Affordable: Easily available and budget-friendly.
  • No Developer Needed: Less hassle for beginners, no mixing required, just apply directly.
  • Decent for Covering Grays Temporarily.

Cons

  • Contains PPD: Prolonged exposure or ingestion (accidental or otherwise) can be harmful.
  • Temporary Results: Washes off faster than regular hair dyes.
  • Has a very strong not-so-good fragrance(try these tips to make your hair smell good)
  • Leads to product build up and has a drying effect of your hair.
  • Messy Application: Can stain skin and clothes easily.
  • Not Suitable for Light Hair Colors: Only works for darkening grey or black hair.

Over To You

Vasmol is a pretty convenient, easy to use and affordable option to hide your grays and achieve temporary dark color. But is does contain some not so good ingredients, smells really bad and leaves your hair dry.

If you just want something that is easy to use and does an okayish job at coloring your hair, go for it. It’s safe when used only as a topical hair dye, in moderation, and with proper precautions. I am not a fan of it though. But no matter what, Always do a patch test behind your ear 48 hours before full using it.
